FAQs About Tutoring for Elementary and Middle School Students

Explore Fundamental Academic Skills Tutoring's personalized approach to improving skills and boosting confidence.

What age group do you work with?

I work with students from pre-K through middle school.

I may also work with older students on a case by case basis.

Do you offer a free handwriting assessment?

I offer a free print handwriting screening. This personalized evaluation will show general handwriting challenges. The results can guide us in determining whether you would like to have your child complete a more detailed assessment that can be used to identify their unique handwriting difficulties and help determine the best way to improve their skills. Contact me today to schedule the screening.

How do you tutor handwriting?

I use a handwriting curriculum to teach proper letter formation, writing and literacy skills. The program emphasizes a multisensory approach that combines visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning techniques. I meet with students through a video-conferencing portal in live weekly sessions. I assign asynchronous activities for students to complete between sessions.

How do you tutor typing/keyboarding?

I feature a multi-sensory keyboarding and typing program. The program teaches student how to correctly and accurately use a computer keyboard. It is also designed to develop reading and spelling skills.

There are two options for participating in keyboarding tutoring:

  • Enroll independently in the program that I recommend at Touch Type Read Spell (use code SANDRAM).

  • Enroll in the recommended program through Fundamental Academic Skills Tutoring. Although this option does not have scheduled sessions--students work through the program asynchronously--I monitor students' participation and progress in the teacher dashboard assign custom modules to help them reach their goals. Parent/student contact and feedback are through email.

Do you tutor any other subjects?

I tutor reading and math to help students develop reading literacy and math fluency.

Reading and math tutoring sessions are with a single student per session and are conducted live by videoconference.

Is your tutoring online?

I tutor handwriting, reading and math through a video-conferencing portal. Weekly sessions are live and face to face in the portal. I assign asynchronous activities for the student to complete between sessions.

Do you offer free assessments for reading and math too?

Yes, I offer a free preliminary screening for reading or math.

The results can guide us in deciding if your child can benefit from completing a more detailed assessment to identify their unique reading or math skill deficits.

Do you have group or individual tutoring?

Handwriting students may be assigned to work in small groups of no more than 6 students, depending on session enrollment.

Small groups allow

  • for a more personalized learning experience than larger groups,

  • social interaction that fosters cooperation and communication,

  • a comfortable environment for participating and asking questions, and

  • a more affordable option, making tutoring accessible for many families.

Reading and math students are assigned to one-on-one, individual sessions.

One-on-one tutoring allows

  • personalized attention so that tutors can tailor their instruction to the specific needs and learning style of each individual student providing targeted support and instruction,

  • individualized pace so that students do not feel pressured to keep up with the rest of the group or class,

  • immediate feedback that can be provided during sessions, helping students to identify and correct mistakes quickly, and

  • increased confidence as students learn from their mistakes and take pride in their progress, engaging and motivating them, leading to improved academic performance.

Keyboarding students learn asynchronously and are not assigned to sessions or groups. They complete lessons on-demand.

On demand learning allows

  • flexibility so that students can learn at their own pace and schedule,

  • accessibility as synchronous tutoring can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection,

  • reduced stress since students may feel less pressure to perform well in real-time, allowing them to focus on learning without the added stress of a live session.

  • affordability because asynchronous tutoring is usually much more affordable than traditional tutoring.
